Macaron

Modular Sofa System

Macaron collection is more than furniture; it is a flexible, adaptive place to stay. This collaboration between Mecanoo and bert plantagie brings architectural thinking and furniture craftsmanship together into a shared design process, resulting in a layered modular sofa system designed for versatile living. True to its name, the system is engineered as a functional “macaron,” defined by the physical layering of the base at the bottom, the seat, and the backrest.

Rather than a fixed object, Macaron is a modular system that can be combined in many configurations and orientations. This allows users to create spatial “scenes” tailored to their environment: intimate islands for focus, social clusters for collaboration, or zig-zag layouts that guide movement through a room.

Developed through user-based activity studies, Macaron responds to real human behaviour. By analysing how people move, meet, work, and relax, each module was designed to support different ways of using a space—from quiet concentration to social interaction—across offices, hospitality settings, and educational environments.

The system’s modularity also supports sustainability. As an adaptable infrastructure, Macaron can be reconfigured over time, reducing the need for replacement and enabling long-term use. With a natural material palette of walnut or oak plinths and high-quality fabrics, it forms a flexible and timeless spatial landscape.

For Masterly, part of Milan Design Week, Mecanoo developed several different configurations using Macaron. These offer an impression of the possibilities of this series, which are almost endless.
